Should Your Alarm Vibrate on Your Wrist or Under Your Pillow?

by Reacher Official 23 Sep 2026

When an alarm has to wake one person while another keeps sleeping, the location of the vibration matters as much as its strength. A wrist alarm puts the signal on the person who needs to get up. A bed shaker sends it through a pillow or part of the bed. Both can let you start without a room-filling sound, but they ask different things of your body and your bedroom.

The choice is easy to overcomplicate. Picture the first minute of your morning: where is your wrist, where is your pillow, and who else is touching the bed?

A wrist alarm stays with you

A watch keeps the vibrating part in contact with your arm when you turn over. That can be useful if your head wanders across the pillow, you change positions often, or you travel between different beds. The signal is localized to a smaller area than an alarm placed in shared bedding.

The main tradeoff is wearing it all night. If the band bothers you or ends up on the nightstand, contact at the wrist stops being an advantage.

The Reacher Vibration Alarm Watch uses this format. On the KL245, wrist vibration starts gently and intensifies, without an intentional audible alarm. The soft, adjustable woven band and physical controls make it a dedicated overnight alarm you can set on the watch itself. That suits a routine where the first alert should stay with the person getting up.

A bed shaker keeps your wrist free

A shaker rests under a pillow or in the bedding, so you need not sleep in a watch. For someone who removes wristwear before bed, that may settle the decision. It can also be easier to keep as a bedside routine: put it in place, set the alarm, and leave your body free of straps.

Placement matters here. Under a pillow, the vibration has to reach you through fabric and wherever your head rests during sleep. In a shared bed, some movement may travel through the bedding, so placing the shaker under your own pillow makes more sense than assuming every position will feel the same.

The Reacher GX has its shaker built into a cordless clock, with no separate wired pad to place under the pillow. You can choose from five vibration levels and set the alarm to vibration only, sound only, or both together. Vibration-only keeps sound out of the morning; the other modes are there when they suit your room and how you prefer to wake.

What are you asking the alarm to avoid?

If the problem is the room hearing your current alarm, either format can help you start with vibration. A wrist watch keeps the first alert on one person. A pillow shaker lets that person sleep without anything worn on the body. If the bed is shared, pillow placement becomes part of the choice.

If sound is not reaching you, think about where you would notice vibration: against your wrist as you turn over, or beneath the pillow where your head usually rests. That contact point is more useful for this decision than a broad claim that one format is stronger.

The first alert is only part of a shared-bedroom morning. Keeping clothes and keys outside the room may do as much for your partner's sleep as choosing a quieter alarm.

If the rest of the routine is the hard part, how to wake without waking your partner covers the room beyond the alarm itself.

How to make the choice

Choose the KL245 if you are comfortable sleeping with a band and want vibration to stay on your wrist as you move. Choose the Reacher GX if you prefer nothing on your wrist and want an under-pillow alarm with adjustable vibration and the choice to use sound. Both can start the morning without an audible alarm; GX lets you select sound or sound plus vibration when you want it.

Whichever you choose, check the charge and intended alarm mode before bed. After a morning together, ask the person sharing the room what they noticed and adjust the band or pillow placement as needed.
